Conserving Nature in China: A Western Idea?

Dr. Shen Hou is an associate professor in the History Department of Renmin University, Beijing, China. She worked with Prof. Donald Worster and received her Ph.D. in American history from the University of Kansas in May, 2008.  After graduation, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Tsinghua University, Beijing. Her book, The City Natural: Garden and Forest Magazine and the Rise of American Environmentalism, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2013. Hou is currently a Carson fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Munich, German. The project she is working on at the Rachel Carson Center is titled “Old Land, New Nature: The Journey of the Ideas and Practices of Nature Conservation from the United States to Modern China.”
