<span style="color:black;background:white">With the increasing inequality, diversity and polarization in many countries, concerns about social cohesion are growing. In this presentation, I question what knowledge we can gain about social segregation by investigating
the homogeneity of the broader acquaintanceship networks of the population with the Network Scale-Up Method (NSUM). Specifically, I present an application that studies whether Spaniards were differentially exposed to social groups that experienced economic
distress (e.g., unemployment, eviction, labor migration) as well as advantaged social groups through their broader acquaintanceship networks during the economic crisis, and if so, whether their network exposure to distress was associated with their institutional
trust, a subjective measure of social cohesion. For this application, we designed a survey with a Network Scale-Up Method module that was administered to a nationally representative sample (N~2,500) in Spain. Results suggest that not only core networks, but
also broad acquaintanceships networks are structured by homophily in age, income, and education, as well as by associational memberships, leading to differential exposure to the social groups that experienced economic hardship. Higher exposure to economic
distress was negatively related to institutional trust, even after controlling for the individual socio-economic situation. I will discuss the implications of these results as well as the benefits, disadvantages, and possible extensions of the NSUM method
for further research into social segregation.</span></span><span style="color:black;background:white"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
