Hi,

The 10th of september 10-12 Malmö Living Labs/Malmö University DESIS lab invite you to a seminar on:

Can design contribute to more democratic and sustainable futures?

With books like Design,When Everybody Design by Italian designer and design researcher Ezio Manzini social change and participatory transitions towards sustainability come into focus. With Making Futures – Marginal notes on innovation, design and democracy, a collection of stories focusing on Malmö, challenges of collaboratively shaping futures beyond neo-liberal strategies of growth through social innovations, commons production and new forms of public engagements are highlighted. In both the Italian and the Swedish situation democratic design experiments (in the small) are carried out in collaborative “living labs” exploring more democratic and sustainable ways of living and being. But is this enough to create necessary transitions towards sustainable futures that stay within “planetary boundaries” and “social targets”? In Designing in the space between stories Anders Emilson suggests that we take a breather, that we slow down and take the opportunity to contemplate which transitions and transformations that are necessary. He proposes a speculative “design thing”, an in-between space for contemplation in the prospect of collapse. This workshop is an invitation to such a design conversation with and around possible democratic and sustainable futures.

Participants will include several of the authors of these books as well as civil servants from The City of Malmö representing projects relating to issues such as sustainability, resilience, inclusion, innovation and democracy.

The seminar will take place at the School of Art and Communication (K3) in the Niagara building House C floor 5. Street address Nordenskiöldsgatan 1. We can meet outside the institution doors on floor 5 a few minutes before 10.00.

Please reply to per-anders.hillgren at mah.se<mailto:per-anders.hillgren at mah.se> no later than the 3d of September if you wish to participate. The amount of participants will be limited to 30, so the quickest replies will get the seats.

Related (and sorry for cross posting on this):
The day before, September 9th at 13.15 you will also have the opportunity to listen when Anders Emilson will defend his PhD thesis:
”Design in the space between stories: design for social innovation and sustainability – from responding to societal challenges to preparing for societal collapse”

Finally, Ezio Manzini, one of the world’s leading writers on design for social innovation, will hold a Medea talk the 10th based on his book Design, When Everybody Design, recently published by the MIT Press. The talk will be at 4 pm in room B0E07 (ground floor of Niagara). Afterwards (at about 5.30 PM), the Niagara Café will be open for refreshments & snacks. You are welcome to drop by even if you don’t have time to go to the lecture! Please read more about the talk, and sign up, here: http://medea.mah.se/event/invitation-medea-talks-ezio-manzini/.
