Dear LiU Design colleagues,

This is an early heads-up and save-the-date for the first PhD Anatomies seminar in the LiU Design seminar series:
Wednesday, Apr 13, at 13:15-15:00, in room K52, floor 5, Kåkenhus, ITN Norrköping.

Possible action point for PhD students below. Please read to the end!

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
The aim of the PhD Anatomies series is to analyze completed PhD dissertations in design research, using a set of specific questions to unpack the knowledge content and structure in a format colloquially known as a dissection seminar.

There are three roles in a dissection seminar: panel member, audience member and chair. Panel members prepare in advance and they are the most active participants in the discussions at the seminar. Audience members are not required to prepare (even though it is of course advisable to skim the dissertation!); they participate in the discussion as they see fit. The chair facilitates the discussion at the seminar and formally examines the PhD students’ participation.

Dissection seminars are normally conducted in English.

DISSERTATION TO BE DISSECTED
The dissertation to be dissected in the first seminar is the following:

Hobye, M. (2014). Designing for Homo Explorens: Open social play in performative frames. PhD, Malmö University. http://muep.mah.se/handle/2043/16510

Abstract: Designing for Homo Explorens is a compositional design perspective within interaction design academia. It extends the Homo Ludens view of humans as playful creatures with the perspective of exploratory interaction. It focuses on socially exploratory interaction between participants mediated through designed artifacts. In the form of a Manifesto, four aspects are introduced which highlight important design dimensions to consider in Designing for Homo Explorens. The four aspects of the Manifesto are concerned with creating exploration through internal complexity, experiential exploration through full-body interaction, social playfulness through distortions of situated norms and a frame for performative interactions. The insights in the four aspects come from knowledge gained through experimenting with twelve working prototypes in real-life contexts, combined with contemporary streams of theory regarding ambiguity, somaesthetics, norms, situatedness and performativity.

Two further dissection seminars will be planned for the fall 2016 semester, addressing dissertations from other parts of the design research field.

PRE-REGISTRATION FOR PANEL MEMBERS
PhD students: You are strongly advised to be on the panel. It is much more rewarding, and it earns you more credits in the formal seminar course. Email me no later than March 24 if you want to be on the panel, and I will provide you with instructions on preparation and the conduct of the seminar.

All: You are most welcome to the dissection seminar as audience members, no registration needed.

Looking forward to hearing from aspiring panel members, all the best,
Jonas Löwgren
