> Abstract:
> Some games have been with us for most part of recorded human history and civilization. As societies have changed, our games have changed with us, and where we have gone our games have followed. This thesis project explores the use of haptics as an active third modality in computer game interface design, alongside the visual and auditory modalities. One exploration became the game Sightlence, which is a translation experiment to make the classic computer game Pong accessible for people with deafblindness. Through its iterations, it became a game that can transpose its critical information seamlessly across its different interface modalities. I refer to this design approach as 'transmodal design'. Another exploration across multiple iterations, was a simulation for learning classroom management, called Simulated Provocations. These explorations are used to discuss future trajectories and possibilities for transmodal design in relation to multimodality and accessibility in games.
