Design for Dialogue in Human Computer Interaction Research

The field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is arguably defined by its interdisciplinarity. From its inception, HCI has brought multiple sets of expertise into conversation, for example, computer science and the human and social sciences, engineering, architecture, design, and more recently the arts and humanities. Creative design practice is now recognised in HCI as a knowledge-generating activity that is pursued in the context of interdisciplinary projects.

In the talk I wish to foreground the interdisciplinary dialogue that is often characteristic of HCI research, and highlight the significant role of design practice in this dialogue for attending to social and experiential engagement in people's technology interactions. I will present work from research projects I've been involved in over the last few years. These projects are linked by a common research interest in how digital technologies can support, enrich, and constrain individuals' expressions of self and identity. I will explain how my research-through-design practice has been informed by the psychological concept of the dialogical self, aiming to open up a discussion with those attending about the way in which notions of dialogue are usefully engaged in HCI - in terms of the subject of study (i.e. interaction), in terms of participation, conversations with materials, and in terms of collaborative sense making in teams and with stakeholders.

Bio

Dr Abigail Durrant is Associate Professor and Leverhulme Fellow in the School of Design at Northumbria University, UK. Her research is based in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and focuses on digital support to identity management and expressions of selfhood, in different contexts and cultures and across the life course. Abigail worked as a designer and ethnographer in commercial research before moving into academia. Her current fellowship is delivering methodological insight about the transformational value of design within multi-disciplinary research teams. She has published extensively on HCI and Interaction Design, in particular on design to support digital photography, and is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) Peer Review College and the Research through Design Conference Steering Committee.
