Dear Collegues
PhD student Åsa Svensson has reach the half-time mark of her studies in the area of design. You are all welcome to attend to her half-time seminar on January 23rd at 10-12 at Campus Norrköping. She will present here work with the title ”Design Principles for Human-Automation Collaboration in High Safety Socio-Technical Systems - Teamwork and Communication in Multiple Remote Towers”. She will present her results so far, and her plans for her studies ahead, and discuss this with her opponent, Clark Borst from TU Delft, Netherlands.

Title: Design Principles for Human-Automation Collaboration in High Safety Socio-Technical Systems - Teamwork and Communication in Multiple Remote Towers
Place: Campus Norrköping, room TBA
When? January 23rd, 10-12.

Abstract: The next generation of air traffic control is a fact with remote towers in operation, controlling airports several hundred kilometers away from where the operator is located. With remote towers came also the digitalization of functions and tools in the tower environment (e.g. window view and flight strips). This has risen the question whether the same tower operator can handle several smaller airports at the same time, to reduce costs and increase proficiency. Multiple remote towers (one operator handling several airports at the same time) will require support from more automation, tools and functions, than in a conventional tower, to be able to handle the complex work. Therefore, communication and teamwork between operator and automation will be major factors in the high safety socio-technical systems as a multiple remote tower is, where automation is seen as a team member. For this to work, the automation must be designed to support teamwork at the same time as the operator stays in the control loop.
The aim of my PhD studies is to present design principles for human-automation teamwork in air traffic control. Design principles mean guidelines or recommendations which can be used in the development of new air traffic control systems, where human automation teamwork is needed to deal with the more complex situations that will arise in the future. Four papers will be included in the dissertation, which all focuses on human-automation teamwork in air traffic control. The presentation aims at presenting the progress of my PhD studies, what has been done so far and the project plans for the upcoming and final projects.

In case you want a copy of the half-time report before the seminar, then please get in touch with Åsa Svensson ( asa.e.svensson at liu.se<mailto:asa.e.svensson at liu.se> )

I look forward to meet you there!
