This presentation will provide insight to a practice-led design research project – a sewing café, facilitated in a small South German town. With this sewing café, the researcher is exploring the interrelations of empowering
citizens through shared learning experiences embedded in participatory design and making workshops, but simultaneously nourishing community cohesion across generations and nationalities. By establishing and facilitating a bi-weekly sewing café the project
investigates how participatory design and making processes can enable social interactions and empower participants in various ways, generating diverse types of value. The project is grounded in addressing contemporary issues on sustainable production and consumption
within the textile industry, but simultaneously enabling means for integration and appreciation of everyone’s skills and knowledge. First results of the qualitative research will build the basis for a critical discussion and reflection with the audience.
