Theories and Politics of International Migration
4 March - 5 April, Intensive week 18-22 March

and Director of the Social Theory Centre at the University of Warwick
The course explores theoretical and empirical aspects of international migration, with more specific analyses of various cases. This enhances students' comprehensive understanding as well as their ability to carry out in-depth analysis. The course sheds light on migration's multidimensional character-including the issues of migrant incorporation, multiculturalism and integration-and familiarizes students with developments at different levels (e.g. global, regional, national and local), as well as with the important interlinkages between these. Besides introducing key theoretical and conceptual tools as well as a range of empirical knowledge, the course also brings forward critical perspectives on current migration policy developments.
Citizenship, Ethnic Division and Social Exclusion: National and Post-national Perspectives

This course aims to engage students in exploring and critically analysing perspectives on citizenship, the interrelations between citizenship and migration, and different models of citizenship-post-national, cosmopolitan, trans-national, etc-beyond and below the level of the nation-state. Normative and theoretical conceptions of citizenship are examined in their practical translations with regard to ethnic and social exclusion/inclusion in policy making, legal frameworks and institutions. The course will also draw attention to the condition of social, political and cultural citizenship. A key argument is that the analysis of citizenship must go beyond the nation-state framework. This is illustrated with a closer look at EU-led initiatives designed to combat discrimination and ethnic and social exclusion. Students will explore these initiatives and their close alignment with policies to enhance economic growth, employment and competitiveness.

General information:
* The courses are offered to postgraduate students (preferably PhD students but advanced MA students are also encouraged to apply).
* Courses comprise 5 weeks of full-time work for 7,5 ECTS. Students spend one intensive week at REMESO, at
Linköping University, Campus Norrköping. Courses are usually examined by a paper assignment.
