Profile of position
Ethnicity and migration is REMESO's main field of research, a field also known as Ethnic and Migration Studies or International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), the latter being the term most frequently used in Sweden and the Nordic. IMER is well established as an academic discipline at several Swedish universities. REMESO develops IMER-research at doctoral level under the designation Ethnic and Migration Studies (Etnicitet och migration). It is one of the university's priority research areas. Since 2008 REMESO's PhD education is integrated with an international Graduate School in Migration, Ethnicity and Society.

The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), founded in 2008, consists of some 15 active researchers and 5-10 doctoral students. Research is combined with teaching within ISV and adjacent departments within Linköping university.

The REMESO Institute develops research on phenomena such as international migration, including forced and irregular migration, nationalism, citizenship, ethnic relations, and diversity, as well as on social, ethnic and economic inclusion, discrimination and racism. The institute examines these issues in relation to processes of globalization and European integration and to transformations of labour markets, nation states and welfare society. REMESO's research profile also covers projects in which migration and ethnicity are related to gender dimensions, colonial and postcolonial histories, social movements, urban segregation, education, health and medicine.

For the positions as doctoral student we are interested in recruiting candidates from different disciplinary backgrounds within the humanities and social sciences. We welcome in particular applicants possessing a broad theoretical, methodological and historical orientation in the area of ethnic and migration studies.

Anyone employed as a graduate student must primarily engage in postgraduate studies. However, a student may be requested to do a limited amount of teaching, administration, and research assistance. Such work may comprise no more than 20 percent of full working hours.
The applicant should be prepared to work in an academic setting which emphasizes the importance of integrated collegial collaboration of transdisciplinary orientation.
The doctoral student is expected to carry out doctoral studies on location at Linköping University's Campus in Norrköping.

Eligibility
Appointment as a doctoral student presupposes that the applicant will be or have already been admitted to postgraduate studies. The positions require that the applicant has (1) an advanced degree, or the equivalent thereof, in an academic discipline relevant to the position; (2) demonstrated skills in the critical analysis of society and culture; (3) demonstrated basic orientation in contemporary theoretical approaches to ethnicity and migration in relation to one or more of the phenomena covered by REMESO's research profile, such as work and welfare, education and pedagogy, politics, history, economics, international relations, cultural studies, artistic practices, social planning and social transformation, gender and media.

[REMESO]
REMESO is an integrated environment for research and education. We therefore encourage applicants who during the course of their doctoral studies also are interested in
seminar activities, research dissemination, education and collaboration with the public and external stakeholders. Applicants shall also be able to demonstrate collaborative skills as well as an ability to inquisitively examine and develop critical, methodological and theoretical perspectives on ethnic and migration studies. The positions require demonstrated analytical skills, a good ability to communicate in written as well as spoken English, and possession of - or willingness to acquire - such skills in Swedish as are necessary for the position. Additional skills in languages that are relevant for the research are considered as merits.
