REMESO NEWSLETTER
January 2022

Dear Reader,
As the final months of the past year saw a new spike of Covid-19 cases it also brought us the happier news that an unusually high number of our researchers successfully secured external funding from many of Sweden’s major research councils. These new projects concern topics that span from migration and art, to refugee housing and the transformation of African border controls during the pandemic. Below we
present some of our new projects, with others to be introduced in subsequent newsletters. We also introduce some of the new books and articles published by REMESO scholars, as well as a preliminary plan for our open spring seminars.

A note on the administrative side: In 2022 Anders Neergaard will be on leave from his duties as director of our institute. Stefan Jonsson will serve as acting director, and Peo Hansen will take over as the director of REMESO’s PhD program in ethnic and migration studies.

Welcome to a new year of research on migration and ethnicity with REMESO!

New Research Projects
Planning for sustainable housing for migrants with refugee backgrounds
in times of changing migration policies.<https://project.ikos.liu.se/remesoproject/project.php?l=en&id=156>
Although the provision of adequate housing is vital for a transformation into sustainable and resilient communities
in cities characterised by hope, such housing conditions have become less accessible in Sweden. Refugees face a particularly
difficult situation, as they are housed in less attractive areas, often in overcrowded and poorly maintained apartments.
This interdisciplinary project aims to understand the impact of the restrictive policy turn on the contemporary housing situation for refugees.
Project Leader: Branka Likic-Brboric, Associate Professor, REMESO. Other participants: Kristoffer Jutvik, P
hD Lecturer, REMESO, Professor Irene Molina, Researcher and Emma Holmqvist, Uppsala University.
Funding agency: FORMAS.

Collective Agency in an era of Authoritarian Automation:
Artistic Research on Protest, Populism, Migration and the Computational Simulation of Crowds<https://project.ikos.liu.se/remesoproject/index.php?l=en>
Stefan Jonsson, professor at REMESO, and Anna Ådahl, artist and PhD in artistic research, have received a research
grant to connect artistic research and practice to aesthetics, sociology and computational modeling and visualization
for three years to answer the question: ”What is a crowd in the 21st century?”
By setting up an experimental space for artistic practice and theoretical dialogue, they will explore how collective protests,
migration and authoritarian populism shape today's politics while also being modelled by digital infrastructures and automated systems.
Funding agency: Swedish Research Council.

Epistemological, philosophical and sociocultural perspectives on post-COVID<https://liu.se/en/news-item/kunskapsteoretiska-filosofiska-och-sociokulturella-perspektiv-pa-postcovid>

[En bild som visar person, restaurang Automatiskt genererad beskrivning]A project involving several researchers with different backgrounds at Linköping University (LiU) has
received SEK 30 million from the Swedish Research Council for research into better understandings of
post-COVID as an urgent healthcare challenge.
Anna Bredström, associate professor in ethnicity and migration at REMESO will study
post-COVID as a diagnosis, combining socio-cultural, philosophical and clinical perspectives.

rent skadligt. För människorna och för statsfinanserna.

Article: “I Must Be from Somewhere. I'm Not from the Moon”
Navigating the Politics of Labelling for Stateless Palestinian Refugees from Syria<https://statelessnessandcitizenshipreview.com/index.php/journal/article/view/275>
Haqqi Bahram, PhD candidate at REMESO has with Jason Tucker, Associate Lecturer at Malmö University, published an article in Statelessness and Citizenship Review, Vol 3 No 2 (2021).
The article explores the relationship between statelessness and refugeeness over time and space. It does so by drawing on how Palestinian refugees from Syria in Sweden navigate the various stateless and refugee labels imposed upon them before, during and after their flight from Syria to Sweden. Standpoint theory was deployed as the basis for understanding how this group of stateless refugees related to these labels.
