Crosscutting social circles and boundary making in schools
Hanno Kruse
University of Cologne
Abstract:
Schools provide more than learning opportunities; it is in this public domain where youth ought to develop lasting social relations and inclusive identities. Facing the challenge of increasingly diverse student bodies, local school contexts differ as to how strongly they evoke boundaries along ethnic lines. The presented work provides an explanation for these differences, focusing on the classic structuralist argument of 'crosscutting social circles.' Two empirical studies exemplify how the formation of friendships and identification among majority and minority students depends on the population structure of their local environment. All analyses thereby rely on network data from the "Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU)" combined with administrative information on the composition and location of all secondary schools in Germany. Using multiple classroom networks, the presented work demonstrates how structural forces at different levels of aggregation affect the (un-)making of ethnic boundaries.
The seminar is open for everyone. Coffee and tea is provided.
