Understanding and theorizing human-nature interactions using a social-ecological network perspective

Abstract:
Actors, ranging from individuals to organizations to nations, are related to each other in multiple ways. These relationships can build on mutual trust, shared interests, trade, and a practice of working together; but they can also be antagonistic. Further, other types of relationships derive from human/nature interactions and ecological interdependencies. Recent research in the scientific domains of environmental governance and sustainability science have developed new methods to better understand the causes and the socio-environmental consequences of such entangled and multilevel social-ecological networks. In this talk I will briefly present some of these methodological developments, as well as some substantive and empirically grounded insights this recent research has contributed with. Further, I will discuss how different assumptions about causality, at the micro and the macro, and across these levels, can be related to social- and social-ecological network structures and outcomes.
