Forced Migration in Different Regions of the World: Lessons Learned from Organic Data
Lisa Singh
Georgetown University
Abstract:
Understanding global displacement and migration is challenged by the limits of existing data sources. Despite great strides made in the last four decades analyzing newly collected survey data and mining existing administrative data, most research relies on data collected well after migration occurs. To support the need for rapid insight, I will present an approach for blending organic data, including Twitter and online newspapers, to understand forced migration in different contexts. The analysis offers new insights about how to blend timely open-source organic data with administrative and survey data, and how to develop indirect estimates of forced migration and its correlates. Finally, I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using these data to capture both emerging and continual displacement.
