How children (and adults) navigate the social world

Abstract:
By asking questions, children assume an active role in their knowledge development. Yet the extent to which children's questions indeed contribute to knowledge development depends on children's ability to assess the social situation and direct questions appropriately. We examine the development of several aspects of this ability. For example, how well do children and adults choose between looking for themselves and asking others to obtain information? How sensitive are they to cues that differentiate informants from each other? Do they take into account the relations between informants? The results reveal both early roots and extended growth of the ability to selectively allocate attention in several decision domains implicated in information gathering.
