How can Climate Activism Accelerate Social Change in Response to the Climate Crisis

Viktoria Spaiser
University of Leeds

Abstract:
Social movements, such as the Abolitionist Movement, the Suffragettes, the Civil Rights Movement etc. have played throughout history an important role in driving social and political change. In this talk we will look at the climate movement, and particular young climate activists to understand to what extent they are driving social change in response to the climate crisis and what the conditions are for accelerating social change. Using a unique and comprehensive Twitter dataset for the period between 2014 and 2021 revolving around the annual UNFCCC COP conferences and major youth climate protest events we combine various computational methods, including transformers-based topic modelling and social network analysis to examine (1) to what extent the themes and demands advanced by this movement are increasingly penetrating the international public climate debate, changing arguments, priorities, and frames around the annual UNFCCC COP conferences and (2) the key actors pushing for change. We find that indeed the themes and demands advanced by the movement have successfully penetrated the discourse around UNFCCC and that youth climate activists were able to gain support from central actors outside the movement, an important condition for social and political change. The results from this computational analysis will be complemented with preliminary results from ongoing follow-up studies using other data sources and methods.
