Subject: ELLIIT distinguished lecture at ISY

Welcome to the following ELLIIT distinguished lecture at ISY/Linköping University.

Title: From discriminative to generative modeling, in modern machine learning

Speaker: Hossein Azizpour, KTH, Sweden

Place: Ada Lovelace, B-huset

Date: 2025-11-24

Time: 13:15-14:00

Abstract: The early decades of machine learning research and practice were dominated by discriminative models, during which numerous variants were proposed and their theoretical properties rigorously established. Over the past decade, however, a notable shift has occurred toward generative approaches, accompanied by the development of several new families of deep generative models.

This talk is organized into two parts. In the first part, I will discuss the fundamental distinctions between discriminative and generative modeling and offer my perspective on their respective future directions, with particular emphasis on how each paradigm can help address the limitations of the other. In the second part, I will provide a brief overview of my group’s work on deep generative modeling, including both general contributions and applications in the life sciences and physics.

Best regards,
Farnaz
