Understanding how clinicians and surgeons perform in the complex healthcare setting at Mayo Clinic
The Human Factors Engineering and Systems Integration (HFESI) team focuses on understanding and improving healthcare work systems at the Mayo Clinic. Under the leadership of Susan Hallbeck, PhD, CPE, PE, and Renaldo Blocker, PhD, the HFESI team will present on research conducted in multiple domains, including the Emergency Department (ED) and the Department of Surgery. Projects include evaluating surgical never events using the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) and assessing usability for: prone patient positioning, minimally invasive surgery tools, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery ports, intraoral masks, and tourniquet application instructions. Additional projects that will be discussed include using radio frequency identification (RFID) for contact tracing, and the prevalence of interruptions in the ED.
Dr. Susan Hallbeck is the Robert D. and Patricia E. Scientific Director, Professor and Section Head of Health Care Systems Engineering and her research focuses on ergonomics, workload and product design/usability. She is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Dr. Renaldo Blocker is the Associate Scientific Director for the Emergency Department Clinical Engineering Living Laboratory and an Assistant Professor in Health Care Systems Engineering. His work focuses on workload, teams, and how the work system impacts clinicians during patient care. Dr. Bethany Lowndes, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Health Care Systems Engineering and a Research Associate in Health Sciences Research working under the mentorship of Dr. Hallbeck. Her work relates to the implementation of human factors and physical ergonomics principles to improve patient and provider outcomes. Dr. Katherine Forsyth is an Assistant Professor of Health Care Systems Engineering and a Research Associate in Health Sciences Research working under the mentorship of Dr. Blocker. Her background is in Human Factors and Cognitive Ergonomics with a focus on error management.
