Dear colleagues,

  * 3 February – REMESO seminar ‘The first thing is to (…) survive’: Dalit feminist voices on reproductive rights and reproductive justice in India
by Johanna Gondouin, Research Fellow, Linköping University

Date: 3-2-2021, time: 13:15-15:00, place: online via Zoom.
Join Zoom Meeting: https://liu-se.zoom.us/j/64855864912

In this seminar Johanna is going to draw upon her ongoing research project “From Waste to Profit: Gender, Neoliberalism and Biopolitics in Indian Commercial Surrogacy”. Below is a short introduction to the project from her and a link to a recent publication:

I’m currently working with Suruchi Thapar-Björkert, Mohan Rao and Anindita Majumdar on a project that explores the politics of reproduction in an age of new reproductive technologies (ARTs) and globalization, with a specific focus on Indian transnational and commercial surrogacy (TCS). Until recently, India was the global capital of a booming market in TCS, and the “outsourcing” of reproductive labor to women of the Global South is a central example of the expanding market in reproductive labor. Female reproductive biology is a main generative site in an emerging “tissue economy”, through the expansion of ARTs and new stem cell industries which are dependent on high volumes of human embryos, oocytes, fetal tissue and umbilical cord blood (Cooper & Waldby 2008; 2014; Waldby 2019).
The project details how the bodies of underprivileged Indian women –considered as ”waste” (by population policies of the post-independence Indian state as well as by policy makers in global North), and their reproduction as something to be “controlled” (Rao 2004; Rao 2010; Connelly 2006; Wilson 2018), become available as sites of profit generation in surrogacy and egg donation through the intersections between neoliberal health policies and hierarchies of gender, class, caste and religion.
The trade with kidneys, blood, sperm, oocytes, human milk and in vivo processes such as gestation and clinical trials has transformed the body into a commodity in an unprecedented way (Sunder Rajan 2007; 2017; Cohen 2004; Scheper-Hughes 2004). By offering a postcolonial feminist analysis of biocapitalism, we wish to contribute to the understanding of the rapidly expanding market in body parts and reproductive labor, and the global inequalities through which it thrives.
