Since the emergence of “New Museology” in the 1980s, all kinds of museologies have been introduced along the way: sociomuseology, ecomuseology, transformative museology, reflexive museology, human rights museology, cybermuseology and post-critical museology to name just a few. We think it is time to bring together some of these strands and see how the disciplinary field can keep its social relevance. We are going to discuss what frames and lenses we are using when talking about “museologies” in plural – but also the dangers of scientific jargon and disciplinary fragmentations which might obscure the mechanisms and subjects of the study.

Meet our panel participants:

Mário Moutinho
I am an Architecture graduate from the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA) and hold a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Paris VII-Jussieu. I am currently a Professor and researcher at Lusofona University of Humanities and Technologies, and since 2007 I have been its Rector.
In the last 30 years I have focused on the area of Sociomuseology, which is a school of thought within the area of Social Sciences. During this period, I have performed various roles such as:
·       President of MINOM-International Council of Museums ICOM between 2008 and 2016 and Vice-President since 2017;
·       Scientific coordinator of the Department of Museology at Lusofona University, 2017-
·       Director of the Master and PhD Programs in Museology between 2017 -
·       Member of the Board of the UNESCO Chair "Education, Citizenship and Cultural Diversity"

Anna Leshchenko is a Vice Chair of ICOM’s International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM). She holds a degree in Museology from the Russian State University for the Humanities and has more than 10 years of experience in teaching museology to university students, as well as museum research and work in the ICOFOM committee. Her latest project “Museum English Hub” combines language teaching with the museum-specific knowledge. She is interested in theoretical issues of museology, museum narratives and museum ethics.

Armando Perla is an independent curator, activist and consultant. He is also a board member of ICOM’s International Committee of Ethical Dilemmas (IC-Ethics). He has been an International Advisory on Museums, Human Rights and Social Inclusion for the City of Medellin, Colombia. Additionally, Armando was part of the founding teams of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Rörelsernas Museum (The Swedish Museum of Migration and Democracy). He collaborates with museums, cultural institutions and communities on issues of social justice, human rights and inclusion in Canada and abroad. Armando has been an adjunct professor at the faculty of law at the University of Manitoba and at the University of Winnipeg  in Canada. He is also a frequent guest lecturer in human rights and museum studies programs in universities in North America, Latin America and Europe. Before working in the museum sector, he worked for several human rights NGOs and academic institutions in Canada and abroad.  Armando holds a Bachelor of Laws from l'Université Laval in Canada and a Master of Laws in International Human Rights Law from Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Sweden. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Art History and Museology at the University of Montreal.

Olga Zabalueva holds an M.A. in Museology from the Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow and the M.A. in Cultural Analysis from Lund University, Sweden. As a museum professional, she has worked in different cultural institutions in Moscow and in Sweden at research and collection departments. Olga is currently doing her PhD in Culture and Society (Tema Q) at Linköping university.
Her research is, by nature, interdisciplinary and focuses on museology as a field of knowledge; museums and the (re)construction of identities; norm criticism and the active social position of a contemporary museum; memory and activism.
