Courses for Swedish and International PhD and MA Students

Autumn 2014

Citizenship, Ethnic Division and Social Exclusion: National and Post-national Perspectives
17 November – 19 December 2014. On-campus week, 1-5 December.

Course Directors: Associate Professors Magnus Dahlstedt and Anders Neergaard
Guest Lecturer: Professor Manuela Boatca, Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany

This course aims to engage students in exploring and critically analysing perspectives on citizenship, the interrelations between citizenship and migration, and different models of citizenship—post-national, cosmopolitan, trans-national, etc.—beyond and below the level of the nation-state. Different conceptions of citizenship are examined in their practical translations with regard to ethnic and social exclusion/inclusion in policy making, legal frameworks and institutions. As the analysis of citizenship must go beyond the nation-state framework, the course takes a closer look at EU-led initiatives designed to combat discrimination and ethnic and social exclusion.

Deadline for applications: 24 October 2014
