Microfoundations for the social sciences

Abstract:
The necessity for microfoundations for the social sciences derives from the assumption that the explanation of higher-level phenomena requires the formulation of mechanisms that include the workings of lower-level phenomena. I will argue that for the formulation of these mechanisms in the social sciences we need theories on the micro level (i.e. microfoundational theories) that include mechanisms of the production of meso and macro-level phenomena by people themselves, rather than just by the researcher (through aggregation or creating indices). I will discuss two such microfoundational theories: Goal-framing theory and Social Production Function (SPF) theory.  Both theories are embedded in what has been called "social rationality", i.e. the fact that for humans, the rational (goal-directed) abilities co-evolved with the social abilities of joint production and co-regulation.
