Multiplex and multimodal networks in collective action fields

Abstract:
In my talk I will present two analytic strategies to explore the composition and structure of collective action fields (CAFs). By these I mean sets of social actors (individuals and organizations with variable degrees of formalization) that cooperate on a voluntary basis in pursuit of collective goods. The first strategy aims at the identification of different "modes of coordination" between organizations within CAFs, through the variable distribution of multiplex ties (see e.g. M. Diani, The Cement of Civil Society: Studying Networks in Localities, Cambridge/New York: Cambridge University Press, 2015). The second strategy explores CAFs as consisting of elements in multiple modes, not only individuals, groups and organizations, but also non agentic elements such as events (for an illustration, see ch.6 in  D. Knoke, M. Diani, J. Hollway, and D. Christopoulos, Multimodal Political Networks, Cambridge / New York: Cambridge University Press, 2021). Illustrations come from work conducted over the years in urban settings as diverse as Milan, Bristol, Glasgow, and Cape Town.
