Determinants of Inequality Acceptability Across Social Contexts

Abstract:
Increasing economic inequality may pose a threat to the sustainability of the European social model. Although there is a growing literature on the causes and consequences of inequality in Europe and beyond, inequality research has largely ignored how rising inequalities shape individual preferences and values. Why is there general support for equality-enhancing policies in some social contexts, while in others social inequalities seem to be widely regarded as acceptable? This seminar focuses on this important but largely unexplored correlate of social inequalities: inequality acceptability, that is, the extent to which existing inequalities in a particular social context are considered fair or acceptable. I report the results of an online experiment testing the joint effect of three determinants of inequality acceptability: individual socioeconomic status, societal economic inequality, and knowledge about the source of inequality. In addition, I present a cross-validation of sociological and economic experimental methodologies to study inequality acceptability.
