Stochastic Actor-oriented Models:
Some basic ideas; and models for the co-evolution of one-mode and two-mode networks

Abstract:
Stochastic Actor-oriented Models have the purpose to represent relational behaviour in social situations. This seminar will start with discussing some basic ideas about their methodological usefulness for social science. The origin of this class of models was with models for one-mode networks, but their fruitfulness increased by the development of co-evolution models, first of networks with behaviour, and later between several networks.
The seminar will focus on the co-evolution of one-mode with two-mode networks. The one-mode network can represent social associations such as friendship or collaboration. The two-mode network can represent affiliations such as memberships, but also activities or cognitions. Multiple ways will be presented in which a one-mode network and a two-mode network may be dynamically connected at the micro level. Cross-sectionally such connections can be reflected by measures of one-mode - two-mode correspondence at the macro level. Several examples will be presented of multilevel co-evolution study of a friendship network with two-mode networks.
