PhD students in Ethnic and Migration Studies

The Department of Culture and Society is devoted to education and research within the humanities, arts and social sciences. Our work is often pursued in inter- and multidisciplinary environments where language, culture and society are in focus.

REMESO, the Institute for Research on Migration, Etnicity and Society, is looking for 3 PhD students in Ethnic and Migration Studies:

  *   1 PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, optional specialization
  *   1 PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, specializing in Migration, Public Service and Health
  *   1 PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, specializing in Illiberal Populism and the Future of Democracy

Your work assignment
In all three positions, applicants must be prepared to carry out their work in an academic context that rewards integrated collegial collaboration with an interdisciplinary approach. Postgraduate students are expected to carry out their studies on site at the Norrköping Campus, Linköping University. Anyone employed as a graduate student must primarily engage in postgraduate studies. However, a student may be requested to do a limited amount of teaching, administration, and research assistance. Such work may comprise no more than 20 percent of full working hours.

  *   Work assignments, PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, optional specialization
The applicant is expected to pursue their doctoral work within one or more of the five thematic REMESO research streams, which include: Citizenship and Ethnic Relations: Social, Cultural and Historical Perspectives; Globalization and the Reconstitution of Normative and Legal Frameworks; Migration, Public Service and Health; Migration Welfare and the Political Economy of Labour Market Segmentation; Post-National Strategies for Development/Growth, Inclusion and Diversity.
  *   Work assignments, PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, specializing in Migration, Public Service and Health
The applicant is expected to pursue their doctoral work within the REMESO thematic research stream Migration, Public Service and Health. The research may have a particular focus on any of the following: Science and technology studies of race, biometrics or genetics; Race/ethnicity and social science of medicine; Migration and health; Racial health inequalities; and/or Migration and biopolitics.
  *   Work assignments, PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies, specializing in Illiberal Populism and the Future of Democracy
The applicant is expected to pursue their doctoral work within the REMESO thematic research stream Citizenship and Ethnic Relations: Social, Cultural and Historical Perspectives, and also within the Graduate School The Future of Democracy: Cultural Analyses of Illiberal Populism in Times of Crises (FUDEM). FUDEM is a multi-disciplinary environment where the collective of junior and senior researchers examines the variety of cultural forms in which illiberal populism reveals itself in times of crises. It is a collaboration between six Swedish universities including Linnaeus University, Linköping University, Lund University, Södertörn University, University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University. Examples of themes for dissertations in Ethnic and Migration Studies that fall within the scope of the Graduate School of FUDEM include but are not limited to the following:

  *   the relation of ethnicity, nationality, and race to illiberal populism;
  *   migration, borders and the future of democracy;
  *   cultural and aesthetic manifestations of illiberal populism;
  *   the historical roots and ideological references of contemporary illiberal populism;
  *   multiple forms of democratic resistance to illiberal populism;
  *   the formation of democratic and anti-democratic collectives in the 21st century

Your workplace
The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO) carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate eduction within Ethnic and Migration Studies or International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). REMESO is one of the university’s priority research areas. Since 2008 REMESO’s PhD education is integrated with an international Graduate School in Migration, Ethnicity and Society.

The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), founded in 2008, consists of some 15 active researchers and 5–10 doctoral students. Research is combined with teaching within IKOS and adjacent departments within Linköping university.

The REMESO Institute develops research on phenomena such as international migration, including forced and irregular migration, nationalism, citizenship, ethnic relations, and diversity, as well as on social, ethnic and economic inclusion, discrimination and racism. The institute examines these issues in relation to processes of globalization and European integration and to transformations of labour markets, nation states and welfare society. REMESO’s research profile also covers projects in which migration and ethnicity are related to gender dimensions, colonial and postcolonial histories, social movements, urban segregation, education, health and medicine.

For the positions as doctoral student in Ethnic and Migration Studies we are interested in recruiting candidates from different disciplinary backgrounds within the humanities, social sciences or medicine.

The applicant should be prepared to work in an academic setting which emphasizes the importance of integrated collegial collaboration of transdisciplinary orientation.

The doctoral student is expected to carry out doctoral studies on location at Linköping University’s Campus in Norrköping.

Your qualifications
The profile requires that the applicant has (1) graduated at master’s level, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses, or, alternatively, has gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way; and has at least 90 credits in disciplines of central relevance to the subject area of ethnic and migration studies; (2) demonstrated skills in the critical analysis of society and culture; (3) an appreciation of contemporary theoretical approaches to social science, humanities and/or medicine; (4) an appreciation of methodological debates in the social sciences and humanities. The applicant should also show interest in socio-cultural and theoretical research on processes affecting ethnic relations, cultural identities, migration, racism and/or definitions of citizenship in a transnational context. The positions requires good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Applications must include, in addition to cover letter:

  *   A plan for a tentative PhD project in an area relevant to the above profile (maximum 2 pages or 1000 words);
  *   A declaration of interest stating why the applicant is interested in pursuing PhD studies at REMESO, and what they expect to contribute to REMESO’s environment for research and education (maximum 2 pages or 1000 words);
  *   A writing sample (examined Master’s thesis, or article).

Terms of employment

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date
1 September or by agreement.
